A Brief History of the Anabolic Steroid

Friday, April 3rd, 2009

The anabolic steroid was not known or used in ancient times, although “anabolic” is derived from the Greek word “anabole” meaning upward thrust and having to do with metabolism. History tells us it was important to the Greeks to enhance their physical forms, but without knowledge of the anabolic steroid, the enhancement of those proud bodies was accomplished only using various foods, meat being the foremost.

Steroids

Men through the ages were and are proud to have a physical body consisting of a musculature usually larger and stronger than that of the female counterpart. The difference in physique is largely due to testosterone, a naturally produced male and female hormone that influences overall growth and vigor. As you might guess from this last statement, the production of testosterone in men is higher than that in women. The stronger body of the male undoubtedly dictated the “hunter-gatherer” descriptive in very early days.

Because of its unique abilities with regard to the human body, testosterone was one of the first human hormones to be synthesized, and as a result, many venders had steroids for sale in the marketplace. It was able, in a much shorter time than wholly natural methods, to enhance musculature and increase the energy of the user. Worldwide attention, however, was not gained until a Russian weight-lifting team in the 1952 Olympics won multiple medals by using legal steroids he had purchased at the time.

Soon after its first Olympian use, a legal steroid was developed in the United States and approved for use mainly because of the success it had gained in those other countries. However, in 1967 the anabolic steroid was banned by the International Olympic Council, which influenced many sports organizations to follow suit. A test to determine use of the anabolic steroid was soon implemented, and thus was born the need to produce a substitute. New types of steroids and masking agents are being constantly developed to hide the use of the anabolic steroid in athletics.

Another name for legal steroids is prohormones. Prohormones were developed with the hope that they would accomplish the same results as the anabolic steroid. However, in the USA they are now given almost equal status with the anabolic steroid and, thus, are classified as illegal with tighter regulation by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

How does one find or purchase legal steroids? There are more than 340,000 websites offering steroids for sale and anyone of adult age can buy steroids online. Caution is emphasized, however, because there are many risks and possible side effects. The decision to buy steroids online and the resulting use of these legal steroids can produce serious damage to the kidneys, liver, and heart when not moderated. Users must be aware that the Anabolic Steroid Control Act passed in 1990 put some anabolic steroid materials in the same category with heroin and cocaine. An old saying reminds us that “Winning isn’t everything,” and when considering the purchase of legal steroids or making a decision as to whether or not to buy steroids online, we would do well to remember that admonition.
